A study by USC Stem Cell scientist Rong Lu and her team identified a subset of blood stem cells that play a critical role in balancing innate and adaptive immune cells. They found that an imbalance can lead to immune aging, diseases, and decreased lifespan. By manipulating specific genes in blood stem cells, researchers were able to reverse the aging process in mice, with delayed agers living longer compared to early agers. These findings provide insights into potential strategies for promoting a more youthful immune system in humans.
