Proton craniospinal irradiation (CSI) has emerged as a new standard of care for treating leptomeningeal metastases, a serious complication of cancer. A study presented at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) 2024 Annual Meeting found that patients receiving proton CSI had significantly longer overall survival compared to those receiving involved-field radiotherapy. The trial showed that proton CSI targets the entire leptomeningeal space surrounding the brain and spinal cord, resulting in better central nervous system control and improved survival. This study marks the first head-to-head comparison of two radiation techniques for leptomeningeal metastases and sets a new standard of care for this condition.
