A pooled analysis of three large Phase III clinical trials found that many patients with brain metastases experiencing cognitive side effects after radiation therapy may fully recover cognitive function. Recovery was more likely with conformal radiation techniques compared to standard whole-brain treatment. The findings, presented at the American Society for Radiation Oncology meeting, suggest that cognitive dysfunction from radiation treatment for brain metastases is reversible. Patients often recover cognitive function within months, with conformal radiation techniques showing a higher likelihood of full cognitive recovery. This research provides valuable information for counseling patients with brain metastases on treatment options.
