New research has found connections between gut microbiome and autoimmune diseases like lupus and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), uncovering potential biomarkers and treatment options. The study published in Annals of Rheumatic Diseases identified specific microbial profiles linked to these illnesses, highlighting shared processes and distinct biomarkers. Researchers collected fecal samples from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and matched controls, analyzing taxonomic and functional profiles using high-throughput sequencing. The study revealed enriched pathways in IBD and SLE related to glucocorticoid receptor signaling and oxidative stress-induced inflammation. Specific bacteria were more prevalent in patients with autoimmune disorders, suggesting potential biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment.
