An Effective Nondrug Approach to Improve Sleep in Dementia

A new phase 3 randomized controlled trial called DREAMS-START showed that a multicomponent nonpharmaceutical intervention improved sleep in people with dementia living at home. The benefits were sustained at 8 months and extended to caregivers. Sleep disturbances are common in dementia and can lead to moving into a care home. The intervention consisted of interactive sessions focusing on sleep hygiene, activity, exercise, routines, distress management, light, and relaxation. The study found significant improvements in sleep quality and neuropsychiatric symptoms in people with dementia, as well as improved sleep and anxiety among caregivers. The results offer hope for treating sleep disturbances in dementia.
