A study published in Annals of Internal Medicine found that Black and Native American individuals had the highest rates of firearm injuries in the United States between 2019 and 2020. The study analyzed 252,376 firearm injuries, with 37.8% categorized as unintentional, 37.3% linked to assaults, 21% involving self-harm, and 1.3% associated with law enforcement. Black Americans had the highest rates of firearm injuries from assaults and unintentional incidents, while Native Americans had the highest rates of fatal injuries caused by law enforcement. The study highlights the need for better data collection to address these disparities in firearm injuries and deaths.
