Medical unions are calling for more investment in capacity and workforce in the health service after the Government announced additional HSE funding in the summer economic statement. The €1.5 billion top-up to the 2024 health budget and €1.2 billion for next year will only allow the health service to operate at its current level, with no funds for capacity and workforce shortages. The Irish Medical Organisation criticized the Government for not factoring this funding into Budget 2024 and warned of the need for more realistic funding in the future. The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation called for an end to the HSE recruitment freeze and for urgent action in retaining healthcare workers. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly noted progress in reducing hospital overcrowding, while Labour TD Ged Nash criticized the initial health spending allocation as a ‘fiction’.
