The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is investigating how a €19 million allocation specifically for children’s spinal and orthopaedic services was spent by Children’s Health Ireland. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has requested an audit to determine how the funds were used, as they were allocated more broadly than intended. Despite an increase in spinal procedures, demand has offset reductions in treatment waiting lists. Donnelly is working to establish a dedicated children’s spinal service in Ireland and has allocated additional funding for CHI spinal services. The Seanad Independent Group’s Scoliosis Bill aims to address the controversies surrounding children’s spinal surgeries, with concerns raised about delays and accountability.
