A jury found Stanford University and Stanford Health Care liable for racial harassment and discrimination against a longtime employee, awarding her $20 million in damages which was later reduced to $10 million by the court. The employee, Qiqiuia Young, filed a lawsuit in 2017 alleging that co-workers at Stanford Cancer Center dressed as Ku Klux Klan members. The court ordered Stanford to pay $5 million in punitive damages and $5 million for defamation and other damages. The case highlights issues of racial discrimination in the workplace and the responsibility of institutions to address and prevent such behavior.
