Japan is currently experiencing a rise in cases of Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS), a severe and potentially fatal complication of a flesh-eating bacterial infection caused by Group A Streptococcus. Symptoms start as fever, chills, and muscle aches, progressing rapidly to low blood pressure and severe complications like necrotizing fasciitis. The country has reported 977 cases of STSS so far this year, with an alarming number of deaths. With no vaccine available, good hand hygiene and prompt treatment of skin injuries are important preventative measures. Immediate treatment with antibiotics and, in severe cases, surgery, are crucial for increasing survival rates and preventing complications.
