Legal Recreational Cannabis Encourages College Enrollment

admin

Ahmed El Fatmaoui’s research shows that in states where recreational marijuana is legal, students are more likely to enroll in college and complete their degree on time. Data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and US National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) over the 2009-2019 period showed that the legal status of cannabis attracted out-of-state students, but did not negatively affect in-state enrolments or college completion rates. While concerns about the effects of marijuana on academic performance exist, the research suggests that students exposed to cannabis are not significantly disadvantaged in their post-secondary education. Future research should focus on how this policy impacts peer dynamics and academic disciplines.
