Short-term alcohol abstinence worsens gut health in alcohol use disorder patients

admin

A recent study in PLoS ONE investigated the effects of alcohol consumption and short-term abstinence on gut dysbiosis in individuals with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). The study found that abstinent AUD patients had distinct gut microbiota and metabolome compositions, higher mental distress, and no improvement in gut microbial health compared to those still drinking. Patients with AUD face gut dysbiosis and metabolic alterations even after short-term abstinence, indicating potential long-term effects of alcohol abuse. Further research is needed to determine if long-term abstinence can reverse these effects, emphasizing the importance of addressing alcohol consumption before it becomes an addiction.
