A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that mice fed milk from cows infected with H5N1 avian flu became very ill, indicating the potential danger of raw milk containing the virus. Experts warn that although the study cannot be conducted in humans for ethical reasons, there is a probable risk for those consuming raw milk. The FDA advises against drinking raw milk due to the presence of dangerous pathogens like E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria. With confirmed infections in dairy cattle and two human cases, the study highlights the importance of pasteurization to reduce the risk of transmitting H5N1.
