What’s Behind Long-Term Antibiotic Prescribing for Acne?

A recent study published in JAMA Dermatology explored why dermatologists are still prescribing long-term antibiotics for acne, despite guidelines limiting their use to 3-4 months. The study identified several barriers hindering clinicians’ adherence to guidelines, including a lack of evidence to justify changes in practice, difficulties with iPLEDGE and oral contraceptives, patient demands, and a perceived lack of effective substitutes for antibiotics. Experts believe that efforts are needed to provide resources and solutions for dermatologists to overcome these barriers and promote antibiotic stewardship. Future research in this area will need to consider the unique characteristics of dermatology patients.
