At the Irish Medical Organisation AGM, various roles in healthcare were discussed, including the impact of social media on young people, the role of GPs as primary vaccinators, new drugs for obesity, and the use of AI in healthcare settings. The focus was on the role of physician associates (PAs) and concerns about their responsibilities and potential impact on doctors. The IMO expressed the need for PAs to support doctors, not replace them. There were motions passed for a defined role for PAs, governance guidelines, and not being accredited by the Medical Council. The IMO is adamant on not allowing PAs to cover doctors’ shifts in hospitals.
