Researchers at the University of Bristol have developed a smartwatch app to help smokers quit by detecting hand movements typical of smoking and reminding them to avoid cigarettes. The app aims to prevent relapses by intervening just before a smoker lights up. In a trial with 18 participants, the smartwatch intervention was found to be feasible and acceptable, with 66% of participants finding it helpful. Cancer Research UK’s Prevention Policy Manager supports the use of smartwatches as a tool to help quit smoking, emphasizing the importance of quitting to prevent cancer. More research is needed to fully understand the effectiveness of this technology.
