Cost of dermatology care drives some to choose social media-endorsed treatments

Cost was found to be the main barrier to dermatologic care for university-age students, leading them to seek skin-related health information on social media. This trend has resulted in adverse reactions from social media-influenced at-home treatments. A survey of Michigan State University students showed that TikTok and Instagram were the most used platforms for seeking skin care information. Acne and dry skin were the most common conditions being treated through social media-influenced remedies. Cost and appointment availability were the main reasons cited for choosing social media treatments over seeing a dermatologist. Overall, more research is needed to understand the impact of at-home dermatological self-treatment practices.
