Scientists discover role of tumor stiffness in promoting cancer cell proliferation

Over 20 million people were diagnosed with cancer and nearly 10 million died from it in 2022. Texas A&M University researchers uncovered new details on cancer progression, showing the influence of mechanical stiffening of the tumor cell’s environment on the nucleus. The nuclear lamina becomes taut in a stiff environment, leading to the movement of YAP protein to the nucleus and increased cell proliferation. Decreasing lamin A/C levels reduced YAP localization, slowing down cell proliferation. This discovery could guide future cancer treatments by targeting mechanical pathways. The researchers aim to test their findings on tumors from patients and were funded by various organizations.
