The government in England aims to end the hospital treatment backlog by 2029, with a target for 92% of patients to wait no longer than 18 weeks for elective care. Healthcare leaders are calling for a monumental increase in activity to achieve this goal. Keir Starmer highlighted this objective as one of six ambitious milestones to deliver by 2029. While healthcare leaders welcomed the focus on the NHS as a priority, they warned that meeting the target for the first time since 2016 would be a challenging task. Labor’s election manifesto also included this pledge earlier in the year.
