Experts have used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate the effects of a gluten-free diet on patients with celiac disease. The MARCO study, led by the University of Nottingham, found that patients with celiac disease had more gut symptoms, slower bowel transit, and higher levels of ‘bad bugs’ in their microbiota. After one year on a gluten-free diet, improvements were seen in gut symptoms, bowel water, and gut transit, but some ‘good bugs’ were reduced. The study highlights the importance of understanding how a gluten-free diet impacts gut function and microbiome in celiac disease for potential future treatment developments.
