A study in Australia found that individuals with melanomas with a Breslow thickness of 0.8-1.0 mm had a higher risk of melanoma-related death compared to those with tumors smaller than 0.8 mm. The research analyzed data from over 140,000 individuals diagnosed with thin melanomas between 1982 and 2014. The 20-year cumulative incidence of melanoma-related deaths was 6.3%, with a higher incidence for tumors of 0.8-1.0 mm thickness. The study suggests considering a change in the T1 threshold to 0.8 mm rather than 1.0 mm in future AJCC staging reviews. Limitations include lack of detailed tumor information and potential inaccuracies in cause of death reporting.
