A central California teacher, Leah Seneng, died after being bitten by a bat in her classroom, presumably with rabies. Despite fewer than 10 rabies-related deaths each year in the U.S., it is almost always fatal if not treated quickly. Seneng found the bat in mid-October and was bitten while trying to remove it. She did not show immediate symptoms but fell ill weeks later and died shortly after being put into a medically-induced coma. The school district confirmed the rabies exposure and is cooperating with health officials. The incident highlights the dangers of coming into contact with wildlife like bats.
