A study comparing supply chain issues for drugs in the U.S. and Canada found that meaningful shortages were 40% less likely to occur in Canada. The difference was attributed to the Canadian government’s approach to the problem. Reports of shortages for 96 medicines were received by regulators in both countries, with the U.S. experiencing a higher rate of shortages than Canada. The study also noted that the shortage risk for critical medicines in Canada was nearly halved. A dedicated government committee in Canada oversees the assessment of risk and impact, and takes necessary actions to prevent shortages in the healthcare system.
