Telehealth advocates support DEA’s third extension of Covid-19 telehealth flexibilities for prescribing controlled substances, stressing the need to make them permanent. These flexibilities, allowing virtual prescribing of controlled substances without an in-person visit, were set to expire in 2020 but now extend to 2025. While 38,000 comments were received on proposed rules to roll back pandemic flexibilities, advocates believe the extension is crucial for underserved communities. Calls for a special registration process to prevent abuse of flexibilities and make telehealth a permanent option have also been made. Hope remains for a more permanent telehealth framework under the Trump administration.
