TORONTO — The AAP has created a framework for speaking to parents and children about digital media consumption.

The “5 C’s of Media Use,” as the academy is calling the approach, stand for: child, content, calm, crowding out and communication.

The framework was developed by the AAP’s Center of Excellence on Social Media and Youth Mental Health, which also created “5 C’s” user guides for clinicians and parents, with versions tailored to infants, toddlers, school-age children, young teens and teenagers.

In this video filmed at the Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting, Tiffany G. Munzer, MD, a developmental behavioral pediatrician at University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and member of the AAP Council on Communications and Media, explains a bit more about the approach.

“We know that families and children are using digital technologies every day to navigate their daily living, and so the American Academy of Pediatrics developed a framework for thinking about how to use digital technologies together and set clear rules and boundaries around digital media,” Munzer said.
