Varenicline, a pill used to help people quit smoking, will once again be available from the NHS in the UK after being withdrawn in 2021 due to impurities. The new version has been approved by the regulatory agency and works by blocking the addictive nicotine in cigarettes from binding to receptors in the brain, making quitting more manageable. It can double or triple a person’s chances of successfully quitting compared to doing so without aids. Varenicline could potentially help more than 85,000 people quit smoking each year, reducing smoking-related deaths and improving overall health. Other quitting aids include nicotine vapes and combination therapies.
