In patients with unstable pelvic fractures, resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) can be a life-saving measure, acting as a bridge for resuscitation and pelvic packing. A study presented at the 2020 virtual annual meeting of the American Society for the Surgery of Trauma found no deaths from acute pelvic hemorrhage in severely injured patients with physiologically deranged patients who received REBOA. REBOA was found to not delay definitive intervention for hemorrhage control, with the combination of REBOA and pelvic packing showing promising results in terms of mortality. The study, while limited to a single institution, highlights the potential benefits of using REBOA in severe pelvic fracture cases.
