The OECD report highlights Ireland’s high number of nurses per capita but a shortage of doctors in the healthcare workforce. The country has a high number of medical graduates, but many international students leave after obtaining their degree. Ireland heavily relies on foreign-trained health workers, with 43.3% of doctors and 51.8% of nurses being trained abroad. The report warns that this reliance exacerbates workforce shortages in lower-income countries. It also notes a decline in students choosing nursing courses since the pandemic. Ireland has a relatively young population, but the share of people over 65 is expected to increase significantly by 2050.
