A study conducted at Cleveland Clinic found that IV acetaminophen did not reduce postoperative hypoxemia or pain in patients who underwent abdominal surgery. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, concluded that IV acetaminophen did not have a significant impact on opioid consumption or other secondary outcomes. As a result of these findings, Cleveland Clinic has removed IV acetaminophen from its formulary. The study suggested that IV acetaminophen may be more effective for less painful procedures, and clinicians are encouraged to consider nonopioid analgesia, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, for abdominal surgery patients.
