Interest is growing in the role of nutrition in slowing or preventing neurodegeneration in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). John Duda, MD, has highlighted the lack of effective drugs in managing PD symptoms and has emphasized the importance of nutrition, such as the Mediterranean and MIND diets, which have shown an inverse association with PD risk. The gut microbiome plays a significant role in PD, and dietary interventions can improve symptoms like constipation and orthostatic hypotension. Consuming specific foods and nutrients, avoiding ultraprocessed foods, and supplementing with vitamins like C and E can also potentially benefit patients with PD. Ongoing studies are exploring the impact of dietary interventions on PD progression.
