New research led by experts at the University of Nottingham suggests that certain diabetes medications, specifically GLP-1 receptor agonists, may help reduce alcohol consumption. The study, funded by the NIHR, evaluated existing literature and found that these medications could potentially target the brain’s reward center, especially in individuals with a BMI over 30. While one study showed mixed results, another found that people taking the drug dulaglutide were more likely to reduce drinking. Overall, observational studies indicated lower alcohol use and fewer related health problems in those taking GLP-1 RAs. This research could provide a future treatment option for excessive alcohol use and potentially reduce alcohol-related deaths.
