A study presented at the ACG 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting found that patients with celiac disease who take an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) may experience worse outcomes, such as increased risk of iron deficiency, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. The study suggested caution when prescribing ARBs to people with celiac disease due to potential negative effects on symptoms and small bowel healing. Data from the study showed increased risks for low hemoglobin, iron deficiency, diarrhea, and abdominal pain in patients taking ARBs. Additional research is needed to further understand the association between ARB use and celiac disease outcomes.
