Doctors in Austria documented a rare case of psilocybin-induced penile amputation in a 37-year-old man with depression and alcohol abuse. After taking magic mushrooms, he severed his penis with an axe and was able to have it partially reattached. The incident is detailed in the Mega Journal of Surgery, which explains that psilocybin is a psychedelic substance found in some mushrooms. Despite successful surgery, the man still experienced severe psychotic symptoms and had to be admitted to psychiatric care. Psilocybin has a long history of religious and spiritual use, but in this case, it led to a dangerous and extreme reaction.
