Brazil achieves milestone in eliminating lymphatic filariasis

The World Health Organization congratulates Brazil for eliminating lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem. This parasitic disease, also known as elephantiasis, has caused suffering worldwide for centuries. Brazil’s success is attributed to integrated actions such as a national plan, mass drug distribution, and strong surveillance efforts. The country’s achievement is a result of years of dedication and collaboration among health workers and authorities. Brazil is now the 20th country globally to eliminate lymphatic filariasis and the 53rd country to eliminate at least one neglected tropical disease. Other countries are encouraged to follow Brazil’s example and work towards disease elimination.
