Nick Hopkinson, Sanjay Agrawal, Ranee Thakar, Charmaine Griffiths, Ian Walker, and J Robert Branston are among the 200 organizations and individuals urging the UK government to invest in creating a smoke-free UK to improve public health and the economy. They argue that ending the tobacco epidemic is crucial, given the £93bn annual cost of smoking to individuals and the economy. They propose implementing a “polluter pays” levy on tobacco manufacturers and maintaining funding for tobacco control measures to protect future generations and support current smokers in quitting. The UK’s global leadership in tobacco control, including support for the FCTC 2030 project, needs to be maintained with continued funding.
