Researchers have found that even small drops in temperature over 2 to 6 days can increase the risk of heart attack by up to 11%. A study in Sweden showed a 10% increase in all heart attacks, an 11% increase in non-ST-elevation myocardial infarctions (NSTEMI), and an 8% increase in ST-elevation myocardial infarctions (STEMI) with a 1 unit drop in temperature. Cold spells also increased the risk of heart attacks by about 8%. The study suggests that individuals are more vulnerable to heart attacks during cold weather. Researchers urge for targeted interventions to protect vulnerable populations during and after cold stress.
