Researchers have found over 3,600 chemicals used in food packaging and processing in human bodies. While harmful substances like PFAS and bisphenol A were expected, many other chemicals detected in the study could also be hazardous. The study highlights widespread human exposure to these chemicals, present in urine, blood, and breast milk. Comparing over 14,000 known food contact chemicals, researchers found 3,601 present in human bodies. Dr. Birgit Geueke emphasized the link between food contact chemicals, exposure, and human health. Dr. Jane Muncke stressed the importance of improving the safety of food contact materials, as many chemicals have unknown risks. Further research is needed into the toxicity and exposure of these substances.
