Dry eye disease affects around 360 million individuals worldwide, causing symptoms like uncomfortable, red, scratchy, or irritated eyes. Laughter therapy has been shown to alleviate depression, anxiety, stress, and chronic pain, as well as strengthen immune function. A study published in The BMJ compared the effectiveness of laughter exercise with 0.1% sodium hyaluronic acid eye drops in treating dry eye disease. The study involved 283 participants and found that laughter exercise was as effective as eye drops in improving symptoms and clinical signs of the disease, including eye discomfort, tear break up time, meibomian gland function, and mental health scores. The authors suggest that laughter exercise could be used as a safe, low-cost home-based treatment for symptomatic dry eye disease.
