Does air pollution drive dementia?

admin

A recent systematic review in BMC Public Health found a link between exposure to air pollutants like PM2.5 and NO2 and an increased risk of dementia and cognitive decline. The review included 53 studies from 17 countries and over 173 million participants. Results showed that chronic exposure to pollutants can lead to adverse cognitive effects and increased risks of various forms of dementia. Evidence suggests that pollutants can disrupt the blood-brain barrier, induce oxidative stress, and promote brain pathology, contributing to cognitive decline. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms and prevent exposure to pollutants, potentially reducing the incidence of dementia in the future.
