Decades of National Suicide Prevention Policies Haven’t Slowed the Deaths

Pooja Mehta’s brother, Raj, died by suicide in March 2020, leaving her feeling blindsided despite her training in mental health first aid. The national suicide prevention strategies have not been successful in reducing suicide rates, with an increase in suicides in recent years. Lack of funding, adoption, and implementation of these strategies, as well as challenges in tracking accurate statistics, have hindered progress. Despite efforts to improve crisis intervention services and increase awareness of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, there is still a significant knowledge gap and funding gap for suicide prevention efforts. Experts hope for progress in addressing the social drivers of mental health and suicide to prevent future tragedies.
