Proinflammatory Diet May Prompt Worse Pain Course in Knee OA

Higher scores on the dietary inflammatory index in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) were linked to increased pain over 10 years of follow-up. The study involved 944 adults aged 50-80 with KOA, who underwent MRI and completed a pain questionnaire. Results showed that higher dietary inflammatory index scores were associated with greater pain, but not with structural changes in the knee. The researchers suggested that an anti-inflammatory diet may reduce pain in KOA patients, calling for future trials on this topic. However, the study had limitations, including a small number of nutrients used for calculation and the inability to account for treatments. The study was supported by the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia and Arthritis Australia, with no financial conflicts disclosed by the researchers.
