Congress passed a temporary spending bill to fund the government past September 30, but they have largely ignored the expiration of the Older Americans Act (OAA), which provides crucial services to older adults. Reauthorization of the OAA has stalled, putting funding for services at risk. Older adults, particularly those with disabilities, are at increased risk from extreme heat due to climate change. OAA services are essential for managing health conditions that exacerbate heat risks. Congress needs to address funding shortfalls and enhance the OAA to better support older adults in facing climate-related challenges. Additional federal investments and climate preparedness are necessary to protect older adults and improve their resilience.
