A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that one-third of prisoners with mental health conditions and nearly 14% of those with chronic physical conditions did not receive any treatment while incarcerated. Co-payments, especially higher ones, were associated with lower odds of receiving care among prisoners. The study, which analyzed data from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, also found an increase in the prevalence of chronic physical and mental health conditions among prisoners. The researchers highlighted the need for better oversight, data collection, and access to care in correctional facilities, as well as the elimination of co-payments to improve health care for incarcerated individuals.
