A study published in JAMA Network Open found that greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with a reduced risk for all-cause mortality among women. The study followed 25,315 initially healthy women for about 25 years, assessing their adherence to the diet and mortality risks. Higher adherence scores were linked to a lower risk for mortality, specifically from cardiovascular disease and cancer. The study also identified specific factors contributing to this reduced risk, including small molecule metabolites and inflammation. The findings suggest that even small changes in metabolic risk factors can lead to significant long-term benefits from following a Mediterranean diet.
