A survey of optometrists found that nearly two-thirds provide less than 20% of their diabetic patients with nutrition or dietary counseling, with 20.5% providing none at all. Despite this, over 70% of optometrists feel responsible for providing nutrition counseling to diabetic patients. The study also revealed that barriers to providing counseling include lack of time, materials, training, and confidence in counseling abilities. Female respondents were more likely to prioritize counseling and suggest utilizing dietitians more frequently. Researchers recommend further studies to assess the impact of nutrition seminars on increasing the percentage of diabetic patients receiving nutrition counseling.
