A 59-year-old man in Mexico has died from a strain of bird flu infection, the first time it has been detected in humans. The man was hospitalized on April 24 and had multiple underlying conditions. The virus, influenza A(H5N2), had been previously seen in poultry in Mexico. There is no evidence of person-to-person transmission, and all contacts of the patient tested negative. The World Health Organization (WHO) believes the risk to the general population is low. The case is unrelated to the bird flu outbreak in the U.S. WHO recommends travelers avoid contact with animals in affected countries and practice good hygiene to prevent infection.
