The European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) has developed new classification criteria for hand osteoarthritis to ensure accurate comparisons in trials for new disease-modifying treatments. The criteria include specific radiographic features and focus on distinguishing between different phenotypes of the disease. The criteria are based on age, duration of morning stiffness, number of affected joints, and agreement between symptoms and X-ray findings. These criteria allow for classification of hand osteoarthritis and its different phenotypes, facilitating research studies and clinical trials with more homogenous patient populations. Further validation through control-group studies is necessary to confirm the effectiveness of these new classification criteria.
