Do taste genes influence how much alcohol we drink and our body fat?

A study published in the Nutrients journal examined the relationship between bitter taste receptor genes, alcohol consumption, and body fat percentage. Taste genes play a significant role in food consumption, with the TAS2R family involved in detecting bitterness. The study investigated the association between TAS2R13 and TAS2R38 haplotype distribution, body fat percentage, and alcohol consumption among college students. Findings showed a connection between TAS2R13 gene and alcohol consumption, but no significant relationship was found with TAS2R38 gene. Ethnicity and gender also showed associations with alcohol consumption and body fat percentage. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.
