A study published in the Jama Network revealed that first responders to the World Trade Center disaster with severe exposure to debris have an increased risk of early onset dementia. The study evaluated over 5,000 responders and found that those with severe exposure were more likely to develop dementia before age 65, even after adjusting for other factors. Responders without dust exposure or using protective gear had a lower dementia rate, while those not using protective gear and involved in risky tasks had a much higher rate. Researchers emphasized the importance of proper protective equipment to prevent dementia in responders exposed to toxic debris.
