A study conducted at the University of Gothenburg has found that bariatric surgery is associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer in women with obesity, particularly in those with high blood insulin levels at the time of surgery. The study included 2,867 women with obesity, half of whom underwent bariatric surgery. Results showed a 32% lower risk of breast cancer in the surgery group compared to those who received conventional obesity treatment. Furthermore, women with high insulin levels had a 52% lower risk of developing breast cancer after surgery. These findings suggest potential personalized treatment options and highlight the role of insulin in cancer development.
